"Ma voi stradui sa scriu ce-mi amintesc, ce mi-a ramas in minte din inlantuirea evenimentelor, poate reusesc sa-mi fac o judecata generala cu privire la ele; nu, voi ajunge cel mult sa cred, sa ma cred pe mine insumi - fiindca pentru mine n-are nicio importanta daca ceilalti cred sau nu. Ma tem doar ca maine mor si nu m-am cunoscut inca. Intradevar, practica vietii mi-a revelat abisul infricosator care ma separa de ceilalti: am inteles ca trebuie, pe cat posibil, sa tac si sa pastrez pentru mine ceea ce gandesc. Iar daca acum m-am hotarat sa scriu e numai pentru a ma face cunoscut umbrei mele - umbra incovoiata pe un perete, care inghite tot ce scriu. Pentru ea vreau sa fac o experienta: sa vad daca ne putem cunoaste mai bine unul pe altul. Fiindca de cand am rupt orice legatura cu ceilalti, vreau sa ma cunosc mai bine pe mine insumi."
